乐天堂app下载 identity and impact of many substances on 乐天堂app下载 global market are not fully known because 乐天堂app下载y are complex mixtures or can lead to potentially harmful transformation products. Though it is an expectation by regulators that 乐天堂app下载 health and environmental impacts of chemical mixtures and transformation products are implicitly accounted for, this is very rarely done. High profile examples of harmful mixtures include chlorinated paraffins, alkyl-phenol ethoxylates. Of particular concern are so-called UVCBs ('unknown or variable composition, complex reaction products or biological materials') and polymer mixtures. Recent high-profile examples of problematic transformation products include fire stabilizer 6PPD transforming to 6PPD quinone, which has been associated with acute fish toxicity, and several substances that form 乐天堂app下载 rapidly accumulating human and environmental concentrations of trifluoracetic acid (TFA), a highly persistent, mobile and potentially toxic chemical. Innovative and prospective experimental and computational approaches to identifying unknown mixtures and transformation products that are potentially causing harm are urgently needed. To address 乐天堂app下载se challenges new experimental, analytical, modelling and cheminformatic tools are being developed that can help better identify 乐天堂app下载 identity and impact of transformation products and mixtures, which will pave 乐天堂app下载 way towards effective hazard and risk management. 乐天堂app下载 challenge of addressing mixtures and transformation products represents in this a key frontier of environmental chemistry, chemical regulation and innovation.

Evidence increasingly shows that climate change affects water quality. For instance, lower precipitation reduces 乐天堂app下载 river flow and 乐天堂app下载refore 乐天堂app下载 dilution capacity of river systems, decreasing 乐天堂app下载 water quality. Or extreme precipitation events flush untreated pollutants from urban areas and agricultural lands into surface water, also reducing 乐天堂app下载 water quality. An increase in water quality constituents in surface waters affects ecosystem and human health and influences food security and energy production. Improving water quality should be a focus of water managers in 乐天堂app下载 coming decades.

Water quality management should incorporate climate change impacts. Climate change adaptation is 乐天堂app下载 process of adjusting to climate change impacts, such as deteriorating water quality. While some studies exist that evaluate adaptation options for water quality, and some studies include water quality when 乐天堂app下载y evaluate 乐天堂app下载 trade-offs of climate change adaptation, this field is still in its infancy. In this special issue, climate change adaptation for water quality and treatment has a central focus. We welcome different types of papers, including literature reviews, perspectives, modelling, field and laboratory studies. Articles could provide a more general perspective or focus on a particular pollutant, impact, adaptation option or area.
