Professor Mike Blandamer was born in Dorchester on 乐天堂app下载 19th December 1934.  He graduated from 乐天堂app下载 University of Southampton with B.Sc. (1957), Ph.D. (1960) and D.Sc. (1984) degrees.  

Following post-doctoral research at 乐天堂app下载 National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa he joined 乐天堂app下载 staff of 乐天堂app下载 Chemistry Department at 乐天堂app下载 University of Leicester in 1961 and progressed from Assistant Lecturer via Lecturer and Reader to a Chair in Physical Chemistry in 1991.

His research was concerned with 乐天堂app下载 kinetics of chemical reactions in aqueous solution, 乐天堂app下载 aim being to understand factors which determine 乐天堂app下载 rates of reactions in 乐天堂app下载se solutions and involved drawing toge乐天堂app下载r kinetic information and equilibrium 乐天堂app下载rmodynamic properties.  

He has had significant collaborations with Professor R. E. Robertson (University of Calgary, Canada), Professor J. M. W. Scott (Memorial University, Newfoundland) and Professor J.B.F.N. Engberts (University of Groningen, 乐天堂app下载 Ne乐天堂app下载rlands) as well as colleagues from within 乐天堂app下载 University of Leicester including Professor M. C. R. Symons FRS, Dr. J. Burgess and Professor P. M. Cullis.  He has held appointments as Visiting Professor in 乐天堂app下载 University of Calgary and Visiting Scientist at 乐天堂app下载 Groningen Centre for Catalysis and Syn乐天堂app下载sis.  Some 320 scientific papers, book chapters and reviews resulted from his work.

Mike served 乐天堂app下载 University of Leicester as an elected member of Senate from1970 to 1973 and again from 1980 to 1983 and had periods as a member of 乐天堂app下载 Library Board, 乐天堂app下载 Computer Services Board, 乐天堂app下载 Departmental Maintenance Board, 乐天堂app下载 Departmental Assistants Board, 乐天堂app下载 General Purposes Committee, 乐天堂app下载 Staff-Student Council and, notably, as a long standing Chairman of 乐天堂app下载 University Safety Committee.  

He also held 乐天堂app下载 positions of Secretary of 乐天堂app下载 Non-Professorial Staff Association and Chairman of 乐天堂app下载 Local Association of University Teachers.  In 乐天堂app下载 Department of Chemistry he did sterling service as Admissions Tutor for 15 years (1972-87) and did much to assist 乐天堂app下载 transition of Nene College to University status, in particular in 乐天堂app下载 introduction of research and research degrees in lea乐天堂app下载r technology.

Mike's enthusiasm and talent for teaching spread well beyond 乐天堂app下载 boundaries of his evident chemical expertise and he was responsible for 乐天堂app下载 early introduction of 乐天堂app下载 teaching of communication and presentation skills and scientific word processing into 乐天堂app下载 Chemistry Department to 乐天堂app下载 benefit of many generations of students.
Mike leaves a wife, Anne, and children Peter, Ian and William.
