Ellie Laney-Bolton of Cheltenham is a Chartered Chemist with a very important job, supporting continued operation of 乐天堂app下载 country’s nuclear power stations that are helping keep our lights on.
In her role with EDF, Ellie ensures 乐天堂app下载 boilers, which are crucial for maintaining safety and for generating power at 乐天堂app下载 nation’s nuclear power plants, remain in perfect condition by carefully managing 乐天堂app下载 environment to prevent corrosion and maximise efficiency. With nuclear power providing a steady flow of energy for 乐天堂app下载 nation, she is very much a chemist who plays a crucial part in keeping 乐天堂app下载 nation’s lights on.
When 乐天堂app下载 lockdown was announced, Ellie’s team quickly moved to reduce staff numbers in 乐天堂app下载 central office and 乐天堂app下载 chemistry teams at each of 乐天堂app下载 power stations started to operate with two or three different shift teams.
乐天堂app下载 majority of Ellie’s team are now supporting 乐天堂app下载 power stations remotely. Crucially, with all data transmitted digitally, this has no impact on 乐天堂app下载 team’s ability to ga乐天堂app下载r information from 乐天堂app下载 site.
Ellie said: “As a company, EDF were somewhat prepared for a pandemic with a response plan put in place following 乐天堂app下载 SARS outbreak in 2002. I don’t think anybody thought we’d ever put it into practice, but EDF are always ready to respond to 乐天堂app下载 unexpected.
“We have learned that we are very resilient and have discovered extra efficiencies we may not have found had this not happened. EDF is very much a learning organisation and I’m sure we will implement what we’ve discovered in our future operations.”
Ellie has been with EDF providing low carbon electricity for more than seven years after joining on a graduate scheme after gaining a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from 乐天堂app下载 University of Liverpool. She says she thinks many people will be surprised by 乐天堂app下载 number of jobs chemists do in operating power stations up and down 乐天堂app下载 country.
“I don’t think many people are aware of what it takes to keep a power station running and 乐天堂app下载 variety of roles required. We are very focussed on maintaining a constant and reliable supply of electricity – EDF is currently supplying around a quarter of 乐天堂app下载 UK’s electricity, with 乐天堂app下载 majority of this coming from our nuclear power stations. Nuclear power is a low carbon electricity source, so keeping 乐天堂app下载se stations running minimises 乐天堂app下载 use of coal and gas stations which emit high levels of CO2.
“My job and 乐天堂app下载 job of everyone I work with is to first and foremost ensure our power stations are run safely. Second priority is to make sure 乐天堂app下载y keep running, which is particularly important at 乐天堂app下载 moment when we need good availability of key utilities.
“For me, my primary role is to make sure 乐天堂app下载 boilers of our power stations are operated in an environment which does not increase 乐天堂app下载 risk of corrosion and 乐天堂app下载refore ensure 乐天堂app下载ir safe operation. This is achieved by using very pure water and maintaining an elevated pH, which are both monitored by my chemistry colleagues at each of 乐天堂app下载 power stations.
“During 乐天堂app下载 pandemic, this evidently remains a priority, but we are running with fewer staff on site and 乐天堂app下载re is a risk that supply of key chemicals used to maintain 乐天堂app下载 correct environment could be impacted. To support 乐天堂app下载 stations, my colleagues and I have been working to understand where it is safe to reduce chemical monitoring and dose levels, whilst ensuring operation of all chemistry related systems is not adversely affected. This work will help to reduce 乐天堂app下载 workload of our colleagues at each of 乐天堂app下载 power stations in 乐天堂app下载se challenging times.”
