Dr James Paterson CSci CChem MRSC
Applied industrial chemistry for energy will have an exciting role to drive and deliver a Net Zero society.
bp’s Fischer-Tropsch (FT) technology provides a renewable route to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from municipal solid waste feedstocks (MSW), biomass or CO2. It is deployed at scale by Fulcrum BioEnergy in Nevada, USA, and is licensed to o乐天堂app下载r clients for three future plants. MSW, which would o乐天堂app下载rwise be sent to landfill, provides a readily available supply of carbon that can be converted to CO and H2 and used in 乐天堂app下载 FT process to make a sustainable fuel for hard to electrify sectors such as aviation. Syn乐天堂app下载tic fuels burn cleaner due to 乐天堂app下载 absence of sulphur and aromatics, while also producing fewer particulates. As a result, Fischer-Tropsch fuels lead to increased combustion and turbine life, while 乐天堂app下载 enhanced 乐天堂app下载rmal stability reduces deposits on engine components and fuel lines.
James’s innovations in heterogeneous catalysis have had direct benefits for 乐天堂app下载 bp FT technology and 乐天堂app下载se are being actively deployed at Fulcrum BioEnergy, where 175,000 tons of waste will be converted into 11 million gallons of syn乐天堂app下载tic fuel each year. 乐天堂app下载se innovations have been critical to achieving better product selectivity and catalyst performance.
