Meldola Medal and Prize

乐天堂app下载 Meldola Medal and Prize was named after Raphael Meldola, President of 乐天堂app下载 Society of Maccabaeans and 乐天堂app下载 Institute of Chemistry. 乐天堂app下载 awards were made to British chemists who have conducted 乐天堂app下载 most meritorious and promising original investigations in chemistry and published 乐天堂app下载 results of those investigations. 

Born in 1849, Meldola went on to become an industrial chemist, inventing 乐天堂app下载 oxazine dye Meldola's Blue. He was Professor of Chemistry at 乐天堂app下载 City and Guilds Technical College in Finsbury for 20 years, publishing over 250 papers and reports during this time. 

His scientific interests extended from organic chemistry to entomology, under 乐天堂app下载 mentorship of Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin, and astronomy, leading 乐天堂app下载 British Eclipse Expedition to 乐天堂app下载 Nicobar Islands, India in 1875. Meldola was president of a number of societies: 乐天堂app下载 Chemical Society (1905-07), 乐天堂app下载 Society of Chemical Industry (1907-09), and 乐天堂app下载 Institute of Chemistry (1912-15).

In 2008, this prize merged with 乐天堂app下载 Edward Harrison Memorial Prize to form 乐天堂app下载 Harrison-Meldola Memorial Prize.
